Saiyidina Abdullah Ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله عنه says: ‘Qaroon belonged to the family of Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ and was his cousin. He made great progress in worldly knowledge and was jealous of Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ. and said to him: The Almighty and Glorious God hath commanded me to take poor-due (zakat) from vou. He refused to give zakat and said to the people that Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ ) wanted to eat up their wealth on the pretext of zakat.
He ordered the prayer and you tolerated it. He gave other commandments and you obeyed them. Now he orders you to pay zakat (poor-due) and asks you to submit to it.’ The people said ‘We cannot tolerate it. You should yourself tell us some plan.”’ He told them: “I have thought) out a plan and that is to induce a corrupt woman to puta blame on Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ that he wants to attack her chastity.”’
The people succeeded in influencing her on the promise of some great reward that she should bring this calumny against Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ. When Qaroon got her assent he went to Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ and said to him: ‘Reveal to the children of Israel the Commandments of Allah, which He hath sent unto you, by gathering them at one place. Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ liked this proposal and got all the children of Israel assembled at one place and when a‘! were present, Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ delivered to them Commandments of Almighty God.”
He told them:
“Allah hath commanded to worship Him only, not to ascribe any partner to Him, treat your relatives with kindness, and then informed them about other commandments through which it was also revealed that if a married man commits fornication, he must be stoned to death.’
"Upon this, the people said:
“And if you commit fornication !” Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ said: “If I commit this offense I should also be stoned to death.’’ The people said: ‘‘You have fornicated.’’ Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ enquired from them in utter amazement: ‘Have I committed fornication?” The people said: “You have done so.*’ And, after saying this, they called for that woman and asked her: ‘What do you say about Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ ?’’
Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ adjured her to state the fact. The woman said: ‘Since you are asking me something on oath, I dare not tell a lie. The fact is that these people have promised me so much reward for casting upon you this blame. You are, however, innocent. O hearing this, Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ be upon him) fell down in prostration with tears in his eyes. In prostration, the Almighty and Glorious God sent unto him a Divine revelation:
‘There is no cause for you to worry about it. We have favored ye with a mighty power to rule over earth so that you award punishment to these people.”
Whatever order you will give to the earth about them, it will submit to that. Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ raised his head from prostration and ordered the earth to swallow them up. The earth had still engulfed them up to their heels when they began to implore Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ to spare their lives. Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ again ordered the earth to engulf them. When they had sunk into the earth up to their necks, they again started imploring Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ.
Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ again ordered the earth to engulf them. The earth swallowed them all. Thereupon, the Almighty and Glorious God sent a Divine revelation on Nabi Musa عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَٰمُ. They begged and implored you to spare their lives. I swear by My Honour that if they had called me and begged Me, I would have requested.
