THE ACCOUNTS OF THE DAY OF RESURRECTION -No:12 - The Punishment for Preachers who do not Act according to what they Preach.

[For Illustration Only]

The Punishment for Preachers who do not Act according to what they Preach. The Holy Prophet has observed: ‘“On Doomsday, a type of men, whatever their number) will! be brought and thrown into Hell. His intestines will! hang out and the man will go round and round as the ass goes round and round the milling-stone (as an animal, oxen or an ass etc. goes round and round the four-milling stone). The people of Hell will gather around him and shall enquire of him: “What happened to you? You used to instruct us to do good deeds and dissuade us from doing wrong deeds ?” He will say in answer to this: “I used to instruct you, but did not act according to my own preachings.’*

In Islam, there isn't a specific, codified punishment for preachers who don't act according to their preachings, but there are strong condemnations and consequences within the faith. Hypocrisy in religious leadership is considered a serious issue, with strong warnings against it in the Quran and Hadith, and it can lead to social censure and divine punishment.

Islamic Teachings and Consequences:

Hypocrisy is Condemned:

The Quran and Hadith (sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad) strongly condemn hypocrisy, especially in religious leaders. It's seen as a form of deception and a betrayal of trust.

Social Censorship:

Preachers who are known to be hypocritical face social disapproval and loss of respect within the Muslim community.

Divine Punishment:

Islamic teachings suggest that while the worldly consequences might be limited, Allah (God) will punish hypocrisy in the afterlife.

Examples in Islamic Texts:

The Quran contains verses about the hypocrites who make false claims and promises, and the consequences they face in the Quran.

Apostasy:

In some interpretations, if a preacher publicly renounces Islam, it could be considered apostasy, which carries severe penalties, including death in some interpretations, according to some scholars. However, this is a separate issue from simply not practicing what one preaches.

Focus on Repentance:

Islamic teachings generally encourage repentance (Tawbah) and forgiveness. Even if a preacher has erred, seeking forgiveness and striving to correct their actions is emphasized.

No Specific Legal Punishments:

Unlike some other offenses, there isn't a specific legal punishment outlined in Islamic law for hypocrisy itself. Punishments are more focused on actions like blasphemy, apostasy, or other actions that are explicitly prohibited according to  STATE HUKUM DAN SYARIAH DEPARTMENT or Majlis Agama Islam Negeri.

Another tradition relates that it is the holy saying of the Prophet of God (peace be upon him): “On the night of my visit to the Empyrean, I saw a class of men whose lips were being burnt into pieces by pairs of scissors, made of Hell-Fire. I asked Gabriel (peace be upon him): ‘‘Who are these people ?”? Gabriel told me, ‘‘These are such preachers from among your people who used to instruct others, but did not act according to their own preachings.”

According to another tradition, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) affirmed: The ‘Zabaniya’ shall seize the learned who practise evil even before they seize the unbelievers. Upon this, the learned shall call out: What is this that we are being seized even before the infidels have been caught? In reply, they shall be told, “The learned and the ignorant are not on equal footing, which means to say that you committed errors, being in full knowledge of what you were doing.” ‘Zabaniya’ is a class of several angels who are appointed to the task of committing people to Hell. Another tradition relates, “Some people will be thrown into Hell whose foul and rotten smell will upset even the denizens of Hell. These inmates of Hell will say to these men: ‘“‘What heinous deed did you commit, a curse of which is now upon you? We've had enough of hardships already. Your foul smell has added to our troubles and made us suffer ever more.’’ These people shall make the reply: ‘We did not derive benefit from our knowledge.” (Targhib).

The Angels Zabbaniya -Guardian of Hell -Fire.

Adam ibn Abd al-aziz describes the zabaniya as angels of death who, according to the Quran (4:97, 32:11), conduct the souls of sinners and question them in the grave. Similar to the angelic pairs Nāzi'āt and Nāshiṭāt and Munkar and Nakir, they are assisting Azrael and seizing the souls of the unjust;

When the angels seize the souls of those who have wronged themselves1, scolding them, “What was wrong with you?” they will reply, “We were oppressed in the land.” The angels will respond, “Was Allah’s earth not spacious enough for you to emigrate?” It is they who will have Hell as their home—what an evil destination!

What is the Zabaniya in Islam?

The Zabaniyah are the nineteen fallen angels that guard the fiery realm of Jahannam, where unbelievers and sinners are tortured. According to the Islamic tradition, they stand above the flames to prevent the sinners from escaping. As angels, the zabaniyah are, despite their gruesome appearance and actions, ultimately subordinate to God (Allah), and thus their punishment is considered just. They often appear as black shadows or winged monsters as tall as the sky.

What is Zabaniya in Islam?

Master of the Day of Judgment, and Allah's peace and blessings be upon His Messenger, and the prophet's family, his companions, and all those who follow them until the Day of Resurrection. Answer is: Zabaniya (الزَّبَانِيَةَ) = the Angels of Hell; the guardian angels of hell.

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, the Beneficent, and the Merciful. Master of the Day of Judgment, and Allah's peace and blessings be upon His Messenger, and the prophet's family, his companions, and all those who follow them until the Day of Resurrection.

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Your soul will be taken by the Angel of Death, who is in charge of you. Then to your Lord you will ˹all˺ be returned.”

[Surah As Sajdah: Ayat 11]

The answer is:

Zabaniya (الزَّبَانِيَةَ) = the Angels of Hell; the guardian angels of hell.

All angels are created by Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) to obey Him, having continuous worship to Him.

So, Zabaniyah, their real and specific work for which they are assigned is to push those who deserve its entrance, to it (May Allah preserve all believers from it, Amen!)

They have the specificity of being hard, respecting the rule of instructions from Allah (سبحانه وتعالى). They are the true guardians of hell, their leader is called "Malik".

You say, they are underrated; where do you get it?

The perfect knowledge belongs to Allah (سبحانه وتعالى).

They are further called "angels of punishment", the "Guardians of Hell", "wardens of hell", "angels of hell", etc. Some consider the Zabaniya to be the hell's Angels' subordinates. As angels, the zabaniyah are, despite their gruesome appearance and actions, ultimately subordinate to God (Allah), and thus their punishment is considered just. They often appear as black shadows or winged monsters as tall as the sky.
