Here's a breakdown of the Islamic perspective on alcohol and its consequences:
Prohibition:
The Quran explicitly prohibits the consumption of alcohol, emphasizing its harmful effects on both the individual and society. Verses like
— Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran
[Surah Al-Ma'idah /5: Verse 90]
highlight the negative impact of alcohol and gambling.
Sinful Act:
Drinking alcohol is considered as a major sin in Islam, and it is seen as a path leading to other sins and moral failings.
Worldly Punishment (Hadd):
Islamic law prescribes a specific punishment (hadd) for drinking alcohol, typically flogging. While the exact number of lashes may vary among different schools of Islamic jurisprudence, the consensus is that a form of physical punishment is warranted for this transgression.
Punishment in the Hereafter:
The Quran also warns of the severe consequences of consuming alcohol in the afterlife, implying that those who indulge in this vice without sincere repentance may face divine punishment. For instance, Sunan Abu Dawud 3189 mentions that Allah will not accept the prayers of someone who drinks alcohol for 40 days if they do not repent.
[Yes, Sunan Abu Dawud 3189 does mention that Allah will not accept the prayers of someone who drinks alcohol for 40 days if they do not repent. The hadith states that if someone drinks alcohol, their prayers will not be accepted for 40 days, but if they repent, Allah will accept their repentance, according to the hadith. However, if they repeat the act, a more severe consequence is mentioned. ]
Emphasis on Repentance:
While the Quran emphasizes the prohibition of alcohol and its negative consequences, it also highlights the importance of repentance and seeking forgiveness from Allah.
Related to Other Sins:
Islamic teachings emphasize that alcohol can lead to other sinful behaviors and actions. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is reported to have said that alcohol is the "mother of all evils".
In essence, the Islamic perspective on alcohol consumption is multifaceted, encompassing both worldly punishments and the warning of severe consequences in the afterlife for those who disregard Allah's commands and engage in this prohibited act.
In Islamic belief, the punishment of the grave ('Adhāb al-Qabr) is a concept where the souls of the wicked are believed to be tormented by angels in the period between death and the Day of Judgement. While the Quran doesn't explicitly mention this punishment, numerous hadiths (sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad) do, indicating that the righteous find the grave peaceful, while the unrighteous face torment. Though the exact nature and duration of this punishment are not fully detailed, it is understood that the punishment can involve physical and spiritual suffering.
Details of the Punishment:
Angelic Torment:
Angels are believed to question the deceased, and those who fail the test face punishment.
Physical and Spiritual Suffering:
While the specific details are not fully revealed, the punishment is understood to involve both the body and the soul.
Not Mentioned in the Quran:
The punishment of the grave is primarily supported by hadith literature, rather than direct verses of the Quran, according to Wikipedia.
Duration and Extent:
The exact duration and intensity of the punishment are known only to Allah, but it is believed to be a serious consequence for the wicked, according to Troid.org.
Belief and Acceptance:
Muslims are expected to believe in the punishment of the grave as part of their faith, without needing to fully comprehend the specific details.
Relevance to Drunkards:
While the concept of the punishment of the grave applies to all those who die in a state of disobedience to Allah, it can be inferred that those who die while habitually intoxicated or unrepentant may face a more severe experience. The Prophet's warning against heedlessness and the hadith about punishments for those neglecting cleanliness after urination suggest that those who die while engaging in sins may face consequences in the grave, according to Troid.org.
1. According to a tradition reported by Hadrat Abu Umama (may Allah be pleased with him) the Holy Apostle (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) observed : “Some people of this Ummah will pass their days and nights in drinking and debauchery. Then one morning such people will be transmuted into monkeys and swines. They will be sunk into the earth and stones shall be showered upon them from the sky. People will bring reports ‘‘Tonight such and such a locality sank underground.
This night such and such a village sank in the earth.” Stones shall be rained on these people as they were rained on the people of Lot. These people will be destroyed by windstorms as the nation of ‘Aad were destroyed. The reasons for such havoc upon these people will be that these people will drink liquor and live on usury ; they will wear silken dresses. They will be surrounded by dancing girls and they wiil be utterly devoid of benevolence.”’ (Ahmad, Ibn Abi Dunya). All this implies that every kind of vice and sin will gain currency among them.
2. Hadrat Abu Huraira relates that the Prophet of God (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) observed: ‘‘Whosoever commits adultery or drinks liquor, God deprives him of Faith in the same manner as if he were made to take off his clothes.” (Hakim).
3. Hadrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) states that the Prophet of God (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) observed as follows: ‘“‘Three persons cannot enter. Paradise: one, a drunkard; second, a person devoid of benevolence; third, a man who practises magic. He who dies without penitence for having taken liquor will be given the waters of ‘Ghota’ to drink on the Day of Judgement.’’ Someone enquired ‘What is Ghota ?”’ The Holy Prophet observed: ‘‘Ghota is a stream in which the dirty blood from the genitals of the adulterers flows. The drunkards will emit such foul smell that even the denizens of Hell will be upset by it.” (Ahmad, Abu Yaala)

It is also narrated in al-Bukhari (5147) and Muslim (3736) from ‘Abd-Allah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“Whoever drinks wine in this world and does not repent from that, he will be deprived of it in the Hereafter .”
What does Islam say about alcohol?;
Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), and gambling, and Al-Ansab, and Al-Azlam (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Shaytan’s (Satan’s) handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful.” [al-Maidah 5:90]
In Sahih al-Bukhari (2295) and Sahih Muslim (86), Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “No one who commits zina is a believer at the moment when he is committing zina, and no one who drinks wine is a believer at the moment when he is drinking it, and no thief is a believer at the moment when he is stealing, and no robber is a believer at the moment when he is robbing and the people are looking on.” This means that such a person is not a believer in the sense of having complete faith, rather his faith is greatly lacking because of this evil action.
In Sunan Abi Dawud (3189), Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah has cursed alcohol, the one who drinks it, the one who pours it, the one who sells it, the one who buys it, the one who squeezes it (squeezes the grapes, etc), the one for whom it is squeezed, the one who carries it and the one to whom it is carried.” (Classed as sahih by al-Albani in Sahih Abi Dawud, 2/700)
In Sunan al-Nasai (5570), Ibn al-Daylami said to ‘Abd-Allah ibn ‘Amr, “O ‘Abd-Allah ibn ‘Amr, did you hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say anything about wine?” He said, “Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say, ‘If any man from among my ummah drinks wine, Allah will not accept his prayers for forty days.’” This was classed as sahih by al-Albani in al-Silsilat al-Sahihah (709). What this means is that he will not be rewarded for them, but he is still obliged to pray; in fact he is obliged to do all the prayers. If he forsakes prayer during this time, he will be committing one of the worst of major sins, one which some of the scholars said amounts to kufr, Allah forbid.
There are many ahadith and reports which state that alcohol is emphatically forbidden and that it is the mother of all evils; whoever falls into this sin, it will lead him into other evil actions. We ask Allah to keep us safe and sound.
Punishment for drinking alcohol in Islam;
“They ask you (O Muhammad) concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: In them is a great sin, and (some) benefits for men, but the sin of them is greater than their benefit” — Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran
[Surah Al-Baqarah /2: Verse 219]
With regard to the punishment of the drinker in this world, the punishment is flogging, according to the consensus of the jurists, because of the report narrated by Muslim (3281) from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) flogged the one who had drunk wine with palm branches stripped of their leaves and with shoes.
But there is some difference of opinion as to the number of lashes. The majority of scholars are of the view that it is eighty lashes for a free man and forty for others.
They quoted as evidence the hadith of Anas quoted above, in which it says that a man who had drunk wine was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he had him flogged forty times with two palm branches that had been stripped of their leaves. Abu Bakr also did likewise (during his caliphate). When ‘Umar was the caliph, he consulted the people and ‘Abd al-Rahman said, “The minimum punishment is eighty,” so that is what ‘Umar commanded.
The Sahabah agreed with ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and did not differ.
The Council of Senior Scholars agreed that the punishment for one who drinks wine is the hadd punishment, which is eighty lashes.
Some of the scholars – such as Ibn Qudamah (may Allah have mercy on him) and Shaykh al-Islam [Ibn Taymiyah] in al-Ikhtiyarat – think that giving more than forty lashes is left to the discretion of the Muslim leader. So if he thinks that there is a need to give more than forty lashes, as happened at the time of ‘Umar, then he may make it eighty. And Allah knows best.” (Tawdih al-Ahkam, 5/330)
